How can this be?

Austin, for its part, is not experiencing a pandemic-induced tech worker surge. Last year, Austin was gaining 2.06 tech workers for every one that left; now it’s down to 1.84, a drop of 10.78%. Though Austin is still gaining tech workers this year, the notion that 2020 was a watershed year for tech workers moving there is a myth.

Austin’s Richest Man in the World

The wealthiest man in the world is also a new Austin resident. Having surpassed Amazon’s CEO Jeff Bezos who is currently worth approximately $184 billion, SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk now has a net worth of over $185 billion. At the start of 2020, Musk was worth about $27 billion. His new status as the world’s richest person can be attributed to the rising share price of his automotive company. [CNBC]

Two of Austin’s newest residents: Joe Rogan and Elon Musk.
